Are Dread Perms Safe for Your Hair?
Apr 02, 2026I receive a lot of questions about dreadlocks—how to care for them, what to do (and what not to do), and how to make the journey feel easier and more natural.
So I’ve decided to start answering your questions in a dedicated series:
My Dreadlocks FAQ Blog Series.
In each post, I’ll take one of your most common questions and give you a clear, honest, and experience-based answer—so you can feel more confident caring for your dreadlocks in a way that feels simple, sustainable, and aligned with your hair.
Let’s start with one of the questions I get asked the most:
The Question
“What is a dread perm and is it safe?”
The Answer
Dread perms are a technique used in some salons to create dreadlocks using chemical processes.
While this may sound like a faster or more efficient method, it’s important to understand what is actually happening to the hair.
What Is a Dread Perm?
In many cases, a dread perm involves:
- Applying a chemical solution to alter the hair structure
- Breaking down the natural bonds in the hair
- Reshaping it into a dreadlock form
This is similar to how traditional perms work—but applied with the intention of forming dreadlocks.
The Risk to Your Hair
When you chemically alter the structure of your hair, you weaken it.
This can lead to:
- Increased breakage
- Loss of elasticity
- Reduced durability over time
In more severe cases, if the process is not done correctly:
👉 The hair can become overly soft and unstable—sometimes described as feeling like “chewing gum”
Longevity Concerns
Dreadlocks are meant to be a long-term hairstyle.
But when the hair has been chemically compromised:
- It may not hold together properly
- It may deteriorate faster
- It can become difficult to maintain
A More Natural Approach
Healthy dreadlocks are created through:
✔ Mechanical structure
✔ Controlled technique
✔ Respect for the natural behavior of the hair
Not through forcing the hair into shape with chemicals.
Final Thoughts
If you are considering a dread perm, make sure:
👉 You fully understand the risks
👉 You choose someone highly experienced
But in most cases, choosing a non-chemical method will give you stronger, more reliable, and longer-lasting results.
Dreadlocks are a journey, and no two heads of hair are exactly the same.
That’s why your questions matter.
I truly care about what you want to learn, what you’re struggling with, and what would make your dreadlock journey feel easier and more supported.
