Does it hurt to have dreadlocks? Does it hurt to get dreadlocks done?
Apr 23, 2026Does It Hurt to Get Dreadlocks?
A real, honest answer from a loctician with 26+ years of experience
One of the most common questions I get from people who are new to dreadlocks is this:
“Does it hurt to get dreadlocks?”
Or…
“Does it hurt to have dreadlocks?”
And it’s such an important question, because it often comes from a place of curiosity — but also a little bit of fear.
So I want to give you a real, honest, grounded answer.
The truth is… it depends on you
There isn’t one universal answer.
Your experience will depend on your body, your scalp, and your sensitivity.
We all experience sensation differently.
What feels uncomfortable to one person might feel completely fine to someone else.
And when it comes to dreadlocks, we are working with your scalp — a very sensitive and personal area.
Why dreadlocks can feel uncomfortable
When dreadlocks are created, there is naturally some tension and pulling involved.
This is because:
- The hair is sectioned
- The hair is worked into a new structure
- There is movement at the root
So yes — there can be moments of discomfort.
But the way the dreadlocks are created makes a huge difference.
My method: a more gentle, holistic approach
Over the years, I’ve developed my own technique called The Seienstyle Process.
This method is designed to:
- Reduce unnecessary tension on the scalp
- Create a more comfortable experience
- Support both you and me as a loctician
When I create dreadlocks, I:
- Backcomb the hair
- Support the root in a way that distributes tension
- Crochet the hair carefully to form the lock
This means that instead of all the pulling happening directly at your scalp, the tension is more evenly distributed.
For clients with a sensitive scalp, this can make a very big difference.
There is also flexibility within the method — we can adapt it depending on what feels right for you and the look you want.
Sensitivity: what I’ve noticed over the years
From my experience, there are some patterns:
If you are not used to hair manipulation…
You may feel more discomfort.
This often includes people who:
- Have had very short hair for a long time
- Are not used to brushing, styling, or tension at the roots
- Haven’t had much physical contact with their scalp
For you, the sensation can feel more intense simply because it’s unfamiliar.
If you are used to styling your hair…
You may feel less discomfort.
This includes people who:
- Regularly style or braid their hair
- Have used hair extensions
- Color or chemically treat their hair
Your scalp is more accustomed to movement, tension, and touch.
What about after the dreadlocks are done?
Once your dreadlocks are installed, your hair will be:
- Sectioned
- Held in place
- Slightly pulled in different directions
For some people, this can feel unusual at first.
It’s not necessarily pain — but it can feel different.
Similar to:
- Wearing hair extensions for the first time
- Having tight braids
- Or simply having your hair styled in a new way
Your body usually adjusts to this over time.
If you’re worried — start gently
If you feel curious but also a little unsure, I always recommend a softer starting point.
✨ Try braiding in a few synthetic dreadlocks
✨ Experience how it feels to have your hair sectioned
✨ Notice how your scalp responds
This gives you a real, embodied understanding of what it might feel like — without committing fully.
It’s a beautiful way to explore.
There is something deeper here
Over the years, I’ve seen something again and again…
Getting dreadlocks is not just about hair.
There is often an inner transformation that happens when someone finally allows themselves to step into the look they’ve been dreaming about.
Something shifts.
There is a sense of:
- Alignment
- Expression
- Coming home to yourself
And that is something I deeply respect and hold space for in my work.
So… is it worth it?
If you feel the call — even if there’s a little fear — I would say:
Explore it.
Not by forcing yourself, but by gently stepping into the experience.
Because your dream hair is not just about how it looks…
It’s about how it makes you feel.
If you have questions
If you’re wondering whether dreadlocks are right for you, or you have concerns about sensitivity or pain, you’re always welcome to reach out.
I’m here to guide you in a way that feels calm, safe, and aligned with you.
