Loctician Certification Online: What a Certificate Means and How to Earn One That Matters
Apr 06, 2022By Ann-Marie Christell, Seienstyle
A certificate is only as good as the skill behind it
When people search for loctician certification online, they are often looking for something reassuring. A piece of paper that says you are ready. Proof for clients, and maybe for themselves, that they know what they are doing.
My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. I have trained more than a hundred locticians in many countries. I want to be honest with you about certification, because I think it matters more than most course sellers admit, and in a different way than many people expect.
A certificate is only as valuable as the training, the practice and the feedback behind it. Anyone can print one. What gives it meaning is what you had to show to earn it.
What a loctician certificate is, and what it is not
A loctician certificate shows that you have completed a specific training in a specific method, and that the person who trained you has seen your work. It tells clients and colleagues where you learned and what standard you were held to.
It is usually not a government licence. Rules for working with hair differ a great deal between countries, and in some places between states or regions. Depending on where you live, there may be requirements for working with clients professionally, and a private course certificate does not automatically replace them. Before you start charging clients, check what applies where you live.
It is not the end of learning. Even the best certificate marks the start of your career, not the finish. Skill keeps growing for years after you earn it.
What to look for in an online certification course
If you are comparing loctician certification courses online, here are the questions I would ask.
- Does anyone actually see your work? A certificate given for watching videos says very little. Look for a course where your teacher reviews your practice and gives you feedback.
- Do you work on real hair before you are certified? Mannequin heads are where everyone starts, but working on real people is a different skill.
- What method are you learning? Does it work on every hair texture? Does it rely on wax or other products? Does it protect your hands and your body?
- Who is the teacher? Look at their finished work on real clients, including dreadlocks they made several years ago. Talk to former students if you can.
- What happens after? Will you have support, a community, and somewhere to turn when a client brings you something new?
How certification works with Seienstyle
I teach the Seienstyle process, the holistic method I have developed over more than two decades for creating, maintaining and extending dreadlocks. It works on every hair texture, uses no products, is gentle on your hands and your client's scalp, and helps dreadlocks begin to mature within two to three months.
In The Professional Loctician Online Course, you move step by step from your first practice on a mannequin head, through dreadlocks with extensions and maintenance, to working with real clients. Along the way, you share your work and receive feedback, and every student has one-on-one video coaching calls with me. I can see what your hands are doing, guide your technique, and help you build the confidence to work with real people.
Certification is something you earn by showing your work, not something you get simply by finishing the videos. Locticians who have trained with me and work in the Seienstyle way can be found on my page of certified Seienstyle locticians, so clients around the world can find someone they can trust.

Why I care about this
People who come to a loctician have often dreamed of their dreadlocks for years. They are trusting someone with something that matters deeply to them. When a poorly trained loctician lets them down, the damage is not only to their hair. It is to the trust they had in their own dream.
That is why I want a Seienstyle certificate to mean something real: that a loctician has learned a gentle, inclusive method properly, has shown their work, and knows how to care for the person in their chair.
