Do you live in Helsinki and dream of working with dreadlocks? Then you may already have looked for a loctician course, and found that a thorough dreadlock training is not easy to find in Finland.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell. I have been making dreadlocks for 26 years and have trained more than a hundred locticians from many countries. My salon is in Stockholm, just a short trip across the Baltic. In this post I explain how you can learn the craft in Helsinki, with me coming to you and teaching you in English. If you would like to know more about the profession first, read the guide How to Become a Loctician and Dreadlock Artist in Finland.

Why a loctician course can be hard to find in Finland

The standard hairdressing training in Finland focuses mostly on cutting, colouring and styling, and very little on dreadlocks. Specialised dreadlock training is rare, and many people who want to learn end up travelling abroad.

That means flights, hotels, days away from work and family, and a course in surroundings you don't know. For many people, that is where the dream gets put on hold.

I come to you

That is why I hold the training where you are. I come to you in Helsinki, and we work together for two days, one-to-one.

  • No travel abroad for you. No flights, no hotels, no long days away.
  • You learn where you will work. In your own surroundings, ideally in the room you will use as your salon.
  • Easier to fit around everyday life. You can sleep at home and stay close to your family.
  • Taught in English. Everything, from the first video call to the community afterwards.
  • I find the hair models. You don't need to find them yourself for the course.

How the two days work

Before we meet, we have a one-to-one video call, and you practise the foundation technique with the online course. When I come to Helsinki, we work side by side on real hair models from nine in the morning until the clients are finished.

You choose what you want to learn, for example dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks or synthetic dreadlocks. I take photos and video of you while you work, so you go home with content ready to use.

Building a dreadlock practice in Helsinki

People with dreadlocks travel, across the city, the country and sometimes across borders, to find a dreadlock artist they trust. When you build a strong foundation and show up clearly as who you are, clients find you.

A few practical things to know before you start:

  • A hair salon in Finland generally doesn't need to notify the municipal health protection authority, unless you also offer beauty or skin-piercing treatments. Still, get in touch with the City of Helsinki's environmental services about your premises before you open, including for a home salon.
  • Most locticians run their own business as a sole trader (toiminimi), registered through YTJ.

After the course

The training doesn't end when I travel home. You get:

  • 5 one-to-one video coaching calls with me
  • guidance in our private community
  • lifetime access to The Professional Loctician Online Course and 6 bonus courses
  • 2 days in the salon with me every year after the training
  • the opportunity to become a certified loctician through Seienstyle

Not in Helsinki?

The training isn't only for people in Helsinki. If you live in Espoo, Tampere, Turku, Oulu or anywhere else in Finland, send me an email and we will find a solution together.
