A long day, a warm room

Picture a winter day in Chicago. Outside, the wind is coming off the lake. Inside, it is warm and quiet, and someone has been sitting in your chair for nine hours. The small talk ran out long ago. Now they are telling you about the decision they have been putting off for years.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. Moments like this are at the heart of the work. The hair is the doorway. What people find when they walk through it is something much deeper, and learning to hold that moment is just as important as learning the technique.

Why Chicago

Chicago is a city of neighbourhoods, music, art and strong communities, stretching along Lake Michigan from the North Side to the South Side and out into the suburbs. It is home to people of every background and every hair texture, many of whom have dreamed of their dreadlocks for a long time.

What our two days together look like

We begin with a one-on-one video call before we meet, so I know where you are and what you want to focus on. You choose from dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks, synthetic dreadlocks and more.

Then I come to you in Chicago, and we work side by side on live hair models over two full days. I guide your hands, your posture and your pace. And as the hours go by, we practise the inner skills too: listening without fixing, holding silence, and staying grounded when something heavy comes up. As a breathwork and meditation teacher, I share simple practices to help you return to yourself between clients.
