A body built for the long haul

On my days off here in Provence, my husband and I are building a garden from scratch. I spend those days moving rocks, digging planting beds and cutting down trees. It is the most physical work I do outside the salon, and I love it.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. My body is stronger now than when I started. That did not happen by accident. Making dreadlocks asks for small, precise, repetitive movements for many hours at a time. The garden asks for the opposite: big, full-body, heavy movement. Over the years, I have learned that a loctician's body needs both.

I think Colorado understands this. It is a state where people climb, hike, ski and spend their free time moving through mountains and open land. If you live there and feel drawn to becoming a loctician, I want to tell you about a way of learning this craft that protects the body you are bringing to it.

The part of loctician training most people skip

For many years, I worked five or six days a week. I believed it was normal to want to lie down on the floor at the end of a working day. My fingers hurt and sometimes went numb. I had been taught a technique that made my hands bleed, and I thought that was proof I was serious.

It was not. It was a sign of a poorly designed technique.

So I went into every detail of how I worked. How I held the crochet hook. How I stood. How I positioned my client. Which chair they sat in, which stool I sat on, where the light came from. Out of all those changes, the Seienstyle process was born. It is the reason I am still doing this work, without pain, after 26 years.

Most loctician training teaches you a hand technique and sends you out into the world. In my training, the furniture, the tools, your posture and the rhythm of your days are part of the method. Because a career that lasts thirty years needs a body that can carry it.

Why Colorado

Colorado is a place of high mountains, clear light and wide skies. From Denver and Boulder to Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and the mountain towns, many people choose a life that keeps them close to nature and to their own bodies.

That way of living is close to my heart. Since moving to Provence, I live slowly and try to follow the cycles of nature as much as I can, because I have learned that this work is best held by a life with room to breathe.

In Colorado, there are so many people who have been dreaming of their dreadlocks for years. When they finally sit down in a loctician's chair, they are not just changing their hair. They are stepping into a version of themselves they have pictured for a long time. They deserve someone who can hold that moment with skill and with care.

How the training works

The Professional Loctician In-Person Training is a two-day, one-on-one training. I travel to you, wherever you are in Colorado, and we work together side by side on live hair models.

Because it is just the two of us, I can watch your hands and your posture all day long. I can show you how to hold the hook so the effort spreads across your hand, how to keep your back straight, and how to move your client instead of bending yourself around them. These are the details that seem small on day one and make all the difference in year ten.

Before we meet, you choose which services to focus on. The options include dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, dreadlock maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks, synthetic dreadlocks and several others. Whether you are new to hair or already a stylist, we begin exactly where you are.

A method that is kind to both bodies

The Seienstyle process is gentle on your hands and on your client's scalp. It uses no wax, no gel and no residue. It works on every hair texture, so you never need to turn anyone away. And because it works with the hair's natural intelligence, dreadlocks made this way begin to mature within two to three months, without the long awkward stage.

The inner side of the work

A long appointment is physically demanding, and it is emotionally demanding too. Clients open up. Old grief and new decisions come to the surface. As a breathwork and meditation teacher, I teach my students how to stay grounded and present through all of it, and how to release what is not theirs to carry. Your nervous system is as much a tool of this work as your hands.

Support beyond the two days

Before the training, we meet on a one-on-one video call to make sure you are ready. Afterwards, you continue with coaching calls and join the Seienstyle community of locticians around the world. You also receive lifetime access to The Professional Loctician Online Course, so you always have the full method to come back to.

We also talk about the business side: how to share your work, attract the clients you want, and charge what your work is truly worth.

So, is in-person loctician training in Colorado right for you?

It may be, if you want to learn this craft in a way that respects your body from the very first day. If you want personal, one-on-one guidance. And if you want to build a practice that can carry you not for five years, but for thirty.
