Learning the hard way, or learning well

When I made my first dreadlocks in 1996, there was no YouTube and no online course. A friend and I found almost nothing in the library and tried to figure it out ourselves. The result was not beautiful. For years after that, I learned mostly through trial and error, and picked up habits in my hands and posture that later took a long time to undo.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. I teach the way I do now so that you can start with the foundation I wish I had had.

Why Dunedin

Dunedin is a university city at the head of Otago Harbour, with the Otago Peninsula, wild beaches and wildlife right on its doorstep. It is a place of learning, creativity and people who like to do things their own way.

There are people in Dunedin and Otago who have been dreaming of their dreadlocks for years, and some who dream of learning to make them. Being far from New Zealand's bigger cities, a well-trained local loctician can mean a great deal here.

What our two days together look like

Before we meet, we have a one-on-one video call, so I know you have understood the foundations and have had time to practise. You choose your focus from dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks, synthetic dreadlocks and more.

Then I come to you in Dunedin, and we work side by side on live hair models for two days. When I am right beside you, I can correct the small things before they become habits: how you section, how you hold the hook, the tension you use and the way you stand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I not just teach myself? You can, but it usually takes years, and you can only learn what you happen to come across. A teacher who can see your work saves you much of that time.

What makes the Seienstyle process worth learning? It works on every hair texture, uses no products, is gentle on your hands and your client's scalp, and helps dreadlocks begin to mature within two to three months.

Is training a shortcut? Not a magic one. You will still need to practise. What it gives you is the right foundation and the clearest path forward.

What support continues afterwards? Coaching calls, the Seienstyle community, and lifetime access to The Professional Loctician Online Course.

So, is in-person loctician training in Dunedin right for you?

It may be, if you want to learn this craft properly from the start, with a teacher right beside you.
