Starting from your own front room

You do not need a storefront to become a loctician. Many of the locticians I have trained started in a spare room at home, with a comfortable chair, a mannequin head to practise on and a small kit of good crochet hooks and combs.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. Starting small and growing step by step is not a lesser path. It is often the most sustainable one, because your practice can pay for its own growth.

What our two days together look like

Before we meet, we have a one-on-one video call, so I know where you are and what you want to learn. You choose from dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks, synthetic dreadlocks and more.

Then I come to you in Fort Worth, and we work side by side on live hair models for two days. Because many students start from home, we also talk practically: how to set up your workspace, which tools are worth buying first, how to keep your posture healthy, and how to keep a clear line between work and home life.

Can I really start from home? Yes, if local rules allow it and you have a space where you and a client can settle in comfortably. We talk through what that space needs.

What tools will I need? Less than you might think. A mannequin head, good crochet hooks, a comb, string, hair pins and some hair for extensions. I also have a free tool guide with the exact tools I use.

What makes the method different? It works on every hair texture, uses no products, is gentle on your hands and your client's scalp, and helps dreadlocks begin to mature within two to three months.
