Loctician Training in New York City: Hands-On Dreadlock Training With the Seienstyle Process
Aug 10, 2023By Ann-Marie Christell, Seienstyle
Every texture, on every block
Walk ten minutes through almost any neighbourhood in New York City and you will pass more hair textures than many locticians see in a year. Fine and straight, thick and wavy, loose curls, tight coils, hair that has been relaxed, coloured or locked before.
My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. I have travelled to New York to do this work, and I have had clients fly from the United States to my salon in Stockholm. What New York asks of a loctician, more than anywhere, is the ability to say yes to every head of hair that sits down in the chair. That is exactly what the Seienstyle process was built for.
Why New York City
From Brooklyn and Harlem to Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, New York is home to people from every corner of the world. Many of them have dreamed of their dreadlocks for years, and many have been told somewhere along the way that their hair was not right for it.
In a city this fast and this full, a loctician who offers a calm, private, unhurried appointment, and who can work confidently on any texture, offers something rare.
What our two days together look like
Before we meet, we have a one-on-one video call. I want to know where you are, what you have practised, and which services you most want to learn. The options include dreadlocks on natural hair, dreadlocks with extensions, maintenance, mermaid dreadlocks, synthetic dreadlocks and more.
Then I come to you in New York City. On the first day, we set up your workspace together, looking at the chair, your stool, the light and your posture, before we begin working on a live hair model side by side. I watch your hands closely, correct small things in the moment, and explain the why behind every step. On the second day, you take the lead more and more, while I guide and support you.
Throughout, we also talk about the parts of this work that are rarely taught: being present with a client for many hours, protecting your body, and building a practice you love.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a hairdresser already? No. Some of my students are experienced stylists, and some have never worked with hair professionally. The training is one-on-one, so it is shaped around where you are.
Does the method use wax or other products? No. The Seienstyle process is completely product-free. The technique does the work, and dreadlocks begin to mature within two to three months, without the awkward stage.
Will it hurt my hands? The crochet technique is small, controlled and designed to protect your hands, so you can do this work for decades.
What happens after the two days? You continue with coaching calls, join the Seienstyle community of locticians around the world, and keep lifetime access to The Professional Loctician Online Course.
So, is in-person loctician training in New York City right for you?
It may be, if you want to welcome every hair texture with confidence and learn a gentle, product-free method with personal guidance.
