"I have never worked with hair. Can I really learn this online?"

This is one of the questions I hear most often. It usually comes with a little worry underneath it. Am I too late? Do I need to be a hairdresser first? Will I be the only beginner?

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. I want to answer you honestly: yes, you can start learning to make dreadlocks online, even if you have never worked with hair before. Some of my students were experienced hairdressers. Many were not. One left traditional hairdressing because of allergies. Another was a single mother looking for meaningful work she could build around her family.

What they had in common was not experience. It was the wish to learn, and the willingness to practise.

Being a beginner is a good place to start

I started as a complete beginner myself. In 1996, as a teenager in a small town in Sweden, I made my first dreadlocks on a friend with the help of a library book. There was no one to teach me, and I learned through years of trial and error, including habits that hurt my hands and took a long time to undo.

Beginners have one real advantage: you have nothing to unlearn. When you start with a gentle, well-designed method and someone who can see your work, good habits become your foundation from the very first day.

Your first step: the free training

If you are at the very beginning and still wondering whether this path is for you, start with my free online training, The Proven Path to Become a Loctician.

It is a three-part video training you can watch from home, in your own time. It helps you understand what this work really is, what it asks of you, and whether it fits your life, before you invest in anything. It is not a hands-on technique course, and there is no pressure at the end of it. It simply helps you decide with clarity.

What learning online looks like for a beginner

When you are ready to learn the craft itself, The Professional Loctician Online Course starts at the very beginning and takes you step by step.

You start on a mannequin head. This is where your hands learn the first movements, again and again, without the pressure of a real person in the chair. You can make mistakes, undo them and begin again as often as you need.

You build skill in small steps. The course moves from your first practice to dreadlocks with extensions and maintenance, so each new skill rests on the one before.

You make the step to real hair. This is where many people who learn on their own get stuck. The course is designed to guide you across that bridge, from the mannequin head to working on real people.

You learn the parts that are rarely taught. How to care for your body through long days, how to be present with a client who opens up to you, and how to begin building a practice.

You can follow the lessons from anywhere in the world, at your own pace, and come back to them whenever you need.

Why beginners need more than videos

Videos are wonderful, but a beginner rarely knows what they are doing wrong. You can watch a lesson ten times and still not see that your tension is too tight or your sections are uneven.

That is why every student in The Professional Loctician Online Course has one-on-one video coaching calls with me. In our calls, I can see your work and give you live guidance, we shape the course around your goals, and you have someone who knows where you are and is waiting to see your progress. For many beginners, that personal support is what makes the difference between giving up at the mannequin stage and going all the way.

You also join The Professional Loctician community, so you are never learning alone.

What you need to start at home

Less than you might think. To begin practising, you need a mannequin head, a few good crochet hooks, a comb, some string, hair pins and a little hair for extensions. A first kit can be surprisingly affordable.

The right tools matter more than the number of tools, especially for a beginner, because poor tools make the work harder and can strain your hands. My free tool guide lists the exact tools I use in my salon every day.

Common beginner worries

"I am not creative or artistic." You do not need to be. The technique can be learned, and your own style grows naturally with practice.

"I am worried about hurting my hands." The Seienstyle process uses a gentle crochet technique designed to protect your hands, and your posture and tools are part of the method from day one.

"What if my first dreadlocks are not good?" They probably will not be perfect, and that is completely normal. Mine certainly were not. Learning comes in waves: you improve, you stumble, you come back stronger.

"Can I learn while working another job?" Yes. The course is online and self-paced, so you can practise around the rest of your life.

Why the Seienstyle process suits beginners

The method you learn is built to be gentle and inclusive from the start:

  • It works on every hair texture, so you never need to turn anyone away
  • It uses no products, no wax, no gel and no residue
  • It is gentle on your hands and on your client's scalp
  • It helps dreadlocks begin to mature within two to three months, so even your first clients can love their hair from day one

Frequently asked questions

Is the course really suitable for someone with no experience? Yes. It starts at the very beginning, and the coaching calls mean the course is shaped around where you are.

How long does it take a beginner? You go at your own pace. How quickly you progress depends mostly on how much you practise.

Can I pay in instalments? Yes, payment plans are available.

What if I would rather learn in person? I also offer a two-day, one-on-one in-person training, which includes lifetime access to the online course.
