Online or In-Person Loctician Course in Australia: Which Is Right for You?
Jul 22, 2022Australia is a big country. Depending on where you live, the nearest loctician you would want to learn from could be a long drive or a flight away. So it is natural to ask: can I learn this online, or do I need to be in the same room as my teacher?
I teach both ways, so I want to give you an honest comparison.
What online learning does well
- You learn at your own pace. You can watch a technique ten times, pause, practise and come back.
- It fits around your life. Work, family and time zones don't stand in the way.
- It costs less. No travel, and a lower course price.
- You keep it. With lifetime access, you can return to the material years later.
Where online learning falls short
The hardest part of making dreadlocks is not knowing what to do. It is what your hands actually do. Grip, tension, the angle of your wrist, how you stand. On video, I can show you. But I can't see you.
Most people who learn only online carry small mistakes for a long time without knowing. And it is easier to lose momentum when no one is waiting for you.
What in-person training does well
- Someone sees your hands. Small things get corrected on the spot.
- You work on real people. With a scalp, a story and hair that behaves its own way.
- You learn the invisible parts. How to hold space, pace a long day and meet the person in the chair.
- It creates commitment. When a date is in the calendar, you show up.
Where in-person training falls short
It costs more, and it takes time out of your life. And two days on their own are never enough. Without follow-up, a lot of what you learn fades.
Why I combine them
This is why my in-person training is built on both. You start with The Professional Loctician Online Course, so you arrive with the foundation in place. Then I come to you in the capital of your state or territory for two one-to-one days with real hair models. And afterwards you have five coaching calls, our community and lifetime access to the online material.
If the in-person training isn't right for you yet, the online course on its own is a good place to start.
How to choose
Choose online if your budget is tight, if you want to find out whether this work is for you, or if you already have some experience with hair. Choose in person if you want to work professionally soon, if you learn best by doing, or if you know you need someone to keep you accountable.
Whichever you choose, check the rules in your state before you take paying clients. Read Do You Need to Be a Qualified Hairdresser to Make Dreadlocks in Australia?
