Learning a hands-on craft from your own home

People often ask me whether you can really learn a hands-on craft like synthetic dreadlocks online. It is a fair question. Hair work lives in your hands, and hands learn by doing.

My name is Ann-Marie Christell, and I have been a professional loctician for over 26 years. My answer is yes, you can, if the course is designed well and you have a way to get feedback on your work. Online learning lets you watch each step as many times as you need, practise in your own time, and come back to the lessons whenever a question comes up. What it needs alongside it is someone who can look at what you are doing and help you improve.

Why learn synthetic dreadlocks online

Learn from anywhere. You do not need to travel or take time away from work and family. You learn where you are.

Go at your own pace. Some people move quickly through the lessons. Others take their time and practise each step until it feels natural. Both are fine.

Watch it again. In a live class, a demonstration happens once. Online, you can pause, rewind and watch a step as many times as you need.

Keep it for later. When a client asks for something you have not done in a while, you can go back to the lesson and refresh your memory.

Synthetic dreadlocks and soft, curly mermaid hair are creative, colourful and temporary. They welcome clients who want to try the look before committing, who love to change their style, or who want colour and length for a new chapter in their life. Done well, they look natural, feel comfortable and protect the hair underneath. Done poorly, they can be heavy, pull on the scalp and damage the hair when they come out. The difference comes down to technique.

Feedback from a distance

The biggest limit of most online courses is that no one sees your work. You can follow every video and still not know whether you are doing it right.

That is why this course includes three one-on-one coaching calls with me. In our calls, we look at your work together, talk through anything you are unsure about, and plan how to bring these services into your practice: who your clients are, how to present the services, and how to price them fairly.

What you need to practise at home

You do not need a salon to start learning. A mannequin head gives you somewhere to practise as often as you like, without the pressure of a client in the chair. You will also need some synthetic hair to work with, and a few good basic tools.
