The first time with your dreadlocks – small habits that make a big difference
The first time with your dreadlocks is special.
It is here you begin to:
get to know your hair
understand how it behaves
create routines that will follow you for a long time
And it does not have to be complicated.
Small, simple things – done regularly – make the biggest difference.
🔄 Palmrolling – an important part in the beginning
During the first month I recommend that you, every or every other day,
take a moment and palmroll your dreads.
It is a simple habit that helps the dreads to:
keep their round shape
not become flat
reduce the risk of bubbles and unevenness
Especially the dreads in the neck can easily become flat since you lie on them when you sleep.
I want to remind you that palmrolling your dreadlocks is something that you do because you will see results a few months ahead, you will not directly see results right when you have done it so do not stress about nothing happening directly.
✋ How to do it – simple and without stress
You do not need to do it advanced.
Take a dread between your palms
Start at the root
Roll with an even, soft pressure
Follow all the way out towards the ends
If you want to work a bit more carefully on an area you can roll between the thumb and the finger for extra pressure.
The most important thing is not perfection –
but that you do it a little and often.
If you like to get extra scent to your hair and that you want to have a product to use that makes that you get better grip in the hair then you can use these products:

🧵 The threads at the scalp – let them do their job
You may have noticed that there are small threads at the scalp.
They are there for a reason.
They help to:
reduce discomfort when the dreads are made
keep the sections in place
prevent the dreads from growing together in the beginning
They also help the hair to start tangling faster when it grows out.
👉 I recommend that you let them stay for about 4–6 months.
Then you can carefully remove them.
And if they have grown in a bit into the dreads – rather let them stay than risk damaging the hair.
⚠️ A common question: rubber bands?
Many ask if you can use rubber bands instead.
My answer is:
it is nothing I recommend.
Rubber bands can:
break off small hair strands
create frizz at the scalp
disturb how the dreads are formed
If you want to tie something up – rather use soft thread or gentler alternatives. Then you can use a type of thread like these:

💫 Get to know your hair instead of controlling it
It is easy to want to “fix everything” in the beginning.
But the truth is:
Dreadlocks are not shaped by you controlling them –
but by you working with them.
So instead of thinking:
👉 “Am I doing it right?”
Try to think:
👉 “How does this feel?”
The more you feel into your hair, the easier everything becomes. If you have questions do not hesitate to reach out to me and I will answer everything that you can think of!
💛 The most important during the first month
If you only should take with you a few things:
Palmroll a little and regularly
Let the threads stay
Avoid rubber bands
Do not stress the process
This is the foundation.
And a calm, stable start makes everything easier further ahead.
