Welcome to a whole new world of dreadlocks - What to expect from the begining Part 1

Welcome to a whole new world of dreadlocks
Now that you have gotten your dreadlocks – and perhaps significantly more hair than you are used to –
it’s not strange if it feels… different.

And I want to start by saying:
it is exactly as it should be.

🌿 The feeling in the scalp and body
Many people experience in the beginning that:

it feels a bit tight in the scalp
it feels tender
the hair feels heavy

Sometimes you can even get a bit of tension headache or feel it in your neck.

It simply means that you are now carrying more hair than before.
The body just needs a little time to get used to it.

And it will.

💭 An unexpected feeling – more hair than you’ve ever had
It’s not just a physical change –
it’s also a mental one.

Suddenly you have:

more volume
more weight
more presence in your hair

And that can feel unfamiliar.

In fact, many experience that it is almost a bigger shock the day you remove your dreads –
because then you realize how much you got used to them.

Give yourself time to grow into it
Everything is new in the beginning.

How you wear your hair.
How it feels.
How you move with it.

My best advice here is not to “do it right” –
but to start playing with it a little.

Try different hairstyles
Put it up in new ways
Feel what feels like you

Don’t be afraid to experiment.
That’s how you find your style in your dreads.

😴 The first nights
I usually am honest about this.

The first nights can be:

a bit uncomfortable
a bit lumpy
sometimes a bit itchy

It is a new feeling to sleep with dreadlocks.

But it usually passes faster than you think.

After a while it doesn’t feel strange at all –
many even experience that it becomes like a little extra pillow.

🌱 Itching and irritation in the beginning
Some people get a bit of itching in the scalp at first.

It can be due to:

tension
that you don’t wash the hair right away
that the scalp is adjusting

If you feel that it irritates a lot there are products that can calm the scalp,
for example a cooling spray.

The products that I recommend for relief are:

But the most important thing to know is:
this is a transition period.

💛 This is the beginning of your journey
It can feel like a lot in the beginning.

New hair.
New routines.
New feelings.

But you don’t need to know everything right away.

You don’t need to do everything perfectly.

You just need to:

give it time
be curious
and let the process take its place

Your dreadlocks will develop together with you.

And that is exactly how it should be.
